...I brought my child in this time. When one dermatological (is this a word?) crisis ends, another one starts. We don't have food allergies. We don't have a lot of sicknesses. But one thing you can count on in our family is a dermatologist visit! And with three fair skinned redheads, I'd assume this is only the beginning!
We noticed a large mole on Tyler's scalp early summer when we cut his hair short. It was not there last summer, so it was new. We had the pediatrician look at it when Ryan was born, and he measured it and said to track it. Well, unrelated Tyler's had strange bumps on his chest since the beach. He would randomly get more, so I scheduled a dermatologist appt and we went in yesterday.
She looked at the mole first and said b/c there are dark spots in it, she suggested doing a biopsy. She said she doesn't normally suggest that with kids if she doesn't have to, but she wanted to with this one. It requires local anesthesia, and we are going to have to basically distract him and get him to be still for it. Then, she'll send it off to see if it's OK.
She told us the bumps on his chest were molluscum contagiosum. It's a viral infection common in kids which affects the top layer of the skin. They look similar to warts. They are contagious and spread easily. However, this doesn't mean he has to be confined to our house. As long as they are covered up, he can go wherever. Our dermatologist just specifically said not to bathe the kids together. He most likely got it from the swimming pool at the beach because it spreads easy in water, and he got them during our beach trip. They can go away on their own but it can take anywhere from 6 months to 5 years. Or they can be treated the same as warts and removed. She gave us a prescription to try first before going that route.
So, we will be scheduling the biopsy in the near future. Of course, I'd hope and pray that it's fine, but if you don't mind keeping us in your thoughts, that would be excellent. :)
There is much more on the Tyler front, but I'll leave it at that for now.

i used to get MC every year i went to the beach w/ the Boccella's to babysit from the hottub and pool with all the kids. It was horrible and i'd get on meds for about 2-3 months each time to get them to go away. Of course I've had these random bumps, even though you had never hear of it!! ;)
