I took Tyler this morning for his 3 year old visit. I had to cancel his original appointment back on April 1 because that was the day I was so sick and had to go to the ER for dehydration.
Anyway, Tyler weighs 31.8 lbs and is 38 3/4 inches tall. He gained 3 lbs and grew 2 inches since his 2 year old visit. He is consistent with where he's always been growthwise. He's above average in height and slightly below average in weight.
He had a semi-vision test. I say "semi" because it's kinda hard to tell a 3 year old to stand still for long with funny glasses over one eye. He got halfway through the chart and then started zoning out. He correctly identified shapes and objects on flashcards. They took a hemoglobin sample for iron, and it came back fine.
Being near Duke, they had researchers asking us to take a survey for kids ages 2-5 dealing with emotions and behavior. As I was answering the questions, I knew we wouldn't qualify for the study. And honestly, I'm glad because if I said yes to some of those questions, I'd go crazy!
We talked about potty training, verbal skills, and the dentist. He's not concerned with where he is or the lack of where he is at all. He thinks that because we (Josh and I) have seen progress in the past 5 months at preschool, that this shows that he's learning. We briefly talked about potty training. It's kind of frustrating talking about it with anyone these days because everyone tells me something different. Wait till he's ready vs. push it. He was kind of in the middle saying that I need to encourage it more but that he's not going to do it until he's ready. His own two boys weren't trained until 3 1/4 years he said. As far as the dentist, we talked about how I forgot to put Tyler on my dental plan and whether we should pay out of pocket or wait until next January. He advised maybe finding out how much it costs, but otherwise he said as long as we are practicing good brushing habits and there isn't history of bad enamel problems in the family, we could probably wait if we needed to.
And finally (for my worried mother), there were signs all over the entrance of the pediatrician's office as well as a masked off section for those who had symptoms corresponding to the swine flu.
No shots today except for the hemoglobin finger prick. He was supposed to pee in a cup for a urine sample. Yeah...they waived that until next year! We go back at age 4.
