4 Year Old Stats

I took Tyler to his 4 year doctor visit this morning. I prepped him in the car on what to expect since he literally hadn't seen a doctor in almost a year! And I did promise him a lollipop...

He did his hearing and vision screening and passed. He weighed in at 38 lbs (50%) and 41" tall (75%). That is a total of 6 lbs and 3" in one year! He had his blood pressure and ears checked. And what amazed me the most is that he peed in a cup for a urine sample. Obviously, he is all boy because he thought it was the coolest thing ever to aim while MOMMY was the catcher with the cup! Nice.

Here is a picture I took with my cell phone after his vision test! He is a goof ball!

We are thinking about doing some private speech therapy this summer since his public therapy will not be in session over the summer break. I don't want him to regress (and honestly, I haven't seen a huge improvement yet anyway). I switched insurance for this very reason, so it's an option.

We also talked about Tyler's highly emotional tantrums lately. We missed the "terrible twos," and the "trifling threes." I don't know what the "fours" are called, but we have them. And, I can pick a "f" word if I need to.

Just kidding :)

Tyler has majorly shown his opinionated self lately. If he doesn't want to do something, he won't. There is always a battle. Lately when it progresses to punishment for not listening, he FREAKS out. The first time he did it, it scared me. I've seen it in the past maybe a handful of times and chalked it up to being overtired. But he is doing it a lot lately. He screams at the top of his lungs, rocks back and forth, throws every limb attached to his body about, and yells "noooooooooooo!" Seriously, if an outsider would hear it they'd think we were harming our child. It's so emotional and dramatic that we can't calm him down. If we leave the room, he freaks out more. If we stay in the room, he flails about. And for me being 8 1/2 months pregnant, I can't contain him. Josh has literally force hugged him to get him to calm down. And once this happened in the bath tub because he didn't want to get out, and we had to pry him out because we were scared he was going to bump his head. He's done this twice now at school and his teachers were just as shocked as I was the first time I witnessed it. It's almost one of those moments where you think "is something wrong with my kid?" So, I talked to the pediatrician about it and of course he thinks it's just how Tyler is going to handle discipline and someone challenging him. Josh said he did the same thing as a kid. Of course he's said over and over again how much better behaved Tyler is than he was as a kid. I hope this isn't the beginning! :) I think he gets so upset and hasn't learned to control his emotions, so we've really been working to explain that it's ok to be upset and mad, but that big four year olds use words instead of throwing tantrums. Josh actually video taped him one night, which I was convinced would make it worse. The moment Tyler realized he was being recorded, he started to calm down. Now, when he starts up I go get the video and play it to him. He realizes really fast how silly he looks! It's worked so far, but I'm not sure how long that will be effective.

All that said, he is a great kid. He is just going through a challenging phase, and I suspect he will go through another in about 5 weeks when there is another child in our house! But such is our life!

Sounds like a great check up! Carter had his today too and he and Tyler are just about the same size.
