We’ve Got Ourselves a 9 month old!

001 copy

As always, I will say that the time is literally flying by. I do not remember it going this fast with Tyler, and I think perhaps that is due to knowing I would have another baby down the line. Ryan is our last as Josh reminds me, so I really think I want to keep him this little forever! When at the pediatrician’s office yesterday, I watched all the new moms bring their newborn babies in and kept thinking that was Ryan just nine short months ago.

Grab a coffee and pull up a chair. This is a long update!

In the past week, Ryan has changed so much. I know that is said a lot around here, but he really has! As you might have seen in a previous post, he is crawling, and it seemed to happen overnight. He was trying to get around and spinning in circles for a while, but never could figure out how to move forward. In a day’s time and on his daddy’s watch, he figured it out! I came home from work and he was beginning to do it! It only took two days before he was literally into everything! We are really having to change our ways and keep tiny Legos and other objects off the floor, and that’s hard when you have an older sibling! Our house is not child proof at the moment and it’s our goal this weekend. The only room that is child proof is Ryan’s room. Call us unprepared if you want. We know!

His favorite room to tear apart is his big brother’s room!

At the same time as learning to crawl, Ryan has learned to pull up. Again, this happened out of nowhere in the last week! The crib is raised, and many times Ryan greets us after his nap by standing up inside of it. If he’s not pulling up on an object, he’s trying to stand by himself by putting his hands on the floor and straightening his legs to stand up! The kid LOVES to stand. While he is a later crawler than Tyler was (7 months), he very well might be walking early just like Tyler was at 10 1/2 months! It’s clear he wants to do want his big brother does!

With these newfound milestones also come a few hard aspects of having a baby around this age. Lately if I leave the room, Ryan thinks I’m leaving the country. We are entering the separation anxiety phase which was a long process with Tyler, so I’m all too familiar with it! So far, Ryan is doing fine with being dropped off with his sitter or going to familiar people. But he definitely wants his mommy to hold him a lot at home! This was around the age with Tyler that I struggled to get ready in the mornings for work and had a screaming baby tugging at my feet. We had bought a playzone to keep Tyler contained in which never did anything but contain a screaming baby. We’ve pulled the same one out for Ryan, and he will play in it for a while if we are lucky, but if he sees me it’s all over!

As you can see, Tyler likes it now at almost 5 years old…

And as a side note, it’s great for torturing our dog…

Poor Toby.

Ryan’s sleep is doing better. We’ve had a good couple of weeks with no teething, colds, or ear infections. It’s been nice, though this week he’s developed a cold which could easily lead to an ear infection. However, beginning this past week Ryan is on a low dose of amoxicillin for 1 to 3 months to help reduce the inflammation in his ears and hopefully prevent future infections when colds come along. This is our remedy before going to tubes. We are hopeful that it will help.

Ryan is going to bed around 7 pm each night. He continues to nap beautifully for his sitter and less beautifully for us at home. He does good some days and then not so good other days. We just do the best we can to train him that nap time is for…ahem napping.

Speaking of food, there’s still not much Ryan won’t eat! He’s still taking 6 ounces of formula every 3-4 hours during the day and eats Stage 2 baby food once or twice a day. He’s enjoying some finger foods as long as I cut them even smaller than they come in the packages. We’ve had a few choking incidents where I have to swipe the food out of his mouth, so he’s not fully ready for the normal size yet. I hope to start using the sippy cup with Ryan soon. I threw out all of Tyler’s, so I need to go stock up on new ones!

He is still making the “baba” and '”dada” sounds though I work with him all the time on “momma.” ;) He loves his baths in the big bathtub with free reign! He smiles and laughs all the time. He’s truly the happiest of babies!

As far as the rest, here is a summary:

Weight: 20 lbs, 3 oz (50%) –my baby ain’t chunky, he’s average!
Length: 28 3/4 inches (75%)
Teeth: two lower and four upper
Hair: he is finally growing it!
Favorite things to do: chew on shoelaces and necklaces and laugh at his brother!
Favorite songs: “You are my sunshine,” “Jesus loves me”

Ryan has gained 2 lbs since his 6 month visit but has not gained any weight since he turned 8 months old. So, it looks like we are leveling off just like Tyler did around this age. In fact, Tyler weighed the exact same weight at 9 months that Ryan does. And Tyler was barely longer at 29 inches. I think we all have a case of “I don’t remember Tyler being like that” syndrome!

However, I will continue to say that while my boys are similar in hair color and statistics, they are definitely very different children. Tyler hated car rides, and Ryan loves them. Tyler hated strollers, and Ryan loves them. Tyler sat up and crawled earlier than Ryan. Tyler had way more hair than Ryan and even had his first hair cut at 9 months! Tyler would sit and watch a Baby Einstein DVD and give him mommy and daddy a break. Ryan? No such luck! And ahem…Tyler slept through the night at 5 months…

Ryan, you are 3/4 of your way through your first year. In three short months, we will be celebrating your first birthday! I simply cannot grasp that, and I know that it’s going to fly by and come all too soon. I guess mommy should start now working on your montage video as well as your brother’s!
