Potty Training (revisited)

I decided to revisit the potty training this past weekend, well....because Tyler's 3 and he's not getting any younger. Honestly, I just feel like at 3 they know what they are doing. Don't call me a doctor, but I'm pretty sure my son is now just making a conscious decision not to do it.

Anyway, I hid the remaining pull-ups I had Saturday morning, and told Tyler that we didn't have anymore. He searched in every room until he finally told me that he'd have to wear underwear. I asked him if he understood what underwear would mean, and he told me that it meant he had to use the potty.

Logic for understanding the process? Check!

I skipped the "potty party" and pushing fluids because I just didn't really feel like going through another disappointment with him. He went all afternoon in the potty (#1 and #2) with no accidents. We had Karson's birthday party to go to, so we decided to stick with it and go in underwear. However, if you remember from earlier potty training days, Tyler's issue was going to the potty in places other than our house. He was scared. So, we decided to bring his potty seat that sits on the big toilet. Luckily, it fit in the diaper bag :)

He didn't want to go at Karen's house, but he ended up going once I told him he didn't get cake. That child climbed up on the potty quicker than I could say sugar high. He ended up going, and we made a huge deal! He did end up with one accident right before we left the party, but he hadn't had a nap, and it was late. So, it was understandable.

Next day, Tyler continued to do well. One accident in the afternoon. We ventured out again with the potty seat, and he peed in the haircut place we went to. He also went in Applebees. I could see my days of pull-ups quickly leaving!

Conquered fear of peeing in strange places? Check!

or not....

I thought FOR SURE that since he used the potty at three strange places, that surely he'd go this time at preschool. I even brought the potty seat with me. I tried for 15 minutes this morning for him to at least SIT on the potty. I didn't care if he did anything or not. He refused and was scared.

So, I left him in underwear and with several changes of clothes. I'm 98% sure that he will either (a) pee on himself all day long or b) hold it all day long. I can't for the life of me figure out what is so scary about that bathroom. It's painted and has decals all over it. I'm really at a lost what to do, but I guess I'll wait and see how bad it was today. I really just want to tough it out, but if he is truly terrified, then I don't know if that's the best option. I might just have to keep trying with him every day. Maybe one day it will click that it's not scary.

It sounds like you are doing everything right! I don't know much about potty training boys, but in talking with some moms of boys in Brooklyn's class when all of her friends were potty training, they had some similar issues. I'm sure I will be coming to you in 3 years asking for your advice with a boy! :-)

I would keep at it! Has he tried standing to pee?...that way he can be in and out in a zip? My boys are both scared of the automatic flushers...could it be those? Good luck!
