Ryan has always had his own schedule, and it's always been different than the one I plan out. For example, I planned his c-section to be on May 6, but he decided to come on his own on April 22. I had planned on moving him into a big boy bed during summer before we went on our annual beach trip, since he sleeps so poorly in a pack and play. However, early bird had his own plans yet again!
Ryan doesn't sleep very soundly throughout the night as it is. He often cries out a few times. But for whatever reason, he has ALWAYS been an early riser. Tyler was too, but early to him was 6am. Early to Ryan is in the 5:00 hour! So, in that hour it is always a challenge to get Ryan to go back to sleep. He rarely wants to. So, early Saturday morning, the protest began and I was over it and just let him cry until it was 6am. Well, I had almost tuned him out when all of a sudden I heard a thump.. and then another thump. It didn't click with me until possibly a minute later what had happened. Sure enough, I walked in to open his door and he was standing right there...OUT OF HIS CRIB. Oh, boy. Really? At 20 months old!? He's not even two!
Josh and I debated on what to do. Ok, actually I debated, and Josh was already making plans for a bed. I finally admitted that knowing Ryan, he would try it again. After all, he has a history of rappelling out of objects. So, the process began and we moved the bottom bed out of Tyler's room to put temporarily into Ryan's room. The bed we used for Tyler is sitting in our parent's basement. I was not too worried about naps since he sleeps on a cot at school. And, I was right because he went down with no issues and took a 2 1/2 hour nap. I was terrified of bedtime though!
However, he did pretty well when we put him down. He didn't fuss or try and get out of bed. He went to bed perfectly after talking a bit. He woke up fussing for a paci at his normal times and came to his door bright and early at 5:30 am. I sent Josh in to see if he could get him to go back to sleep. He met him at the door hearing Ryan say, "hi daddy!" Ryan didn't last long in his bed before trying to open his door again, but at least it was closer to 6am by that point. Things could change, but so far he is doing well!
I cannot believe we are making this transition so soon. I was NOT prepared! My friend and I have come up with a nickname for Ryan: Rebellious, Rappelling Ryan (RRR)! Until we figure something out, this is his little set up. I took this picture before his nap yesterday.
