First Report Card!

Yesterday was my first parent/teacher conference where I received Tyler's report card. Here is a breakdown of how he is doing!

Independent Reading Level = A

The developmental stages of reading for kindergarteners are defined by Emergent Readers (A-B) and then Early Readers (C-H).  With Tyler at a level A, he is where the state expects students to be at the second nine weeks of school.  Kindergarteners are expected to reach the C-D stage by the end of the year. Level A means the following:
  • Becomes aware of print.
  • Read orally, matching word by word.
  • Use meaning and language in simple text.
  • Hear sounds in words.
  • Recognize name and some letters.
  • Use information from pictures.
  • Connect words with names.
  • Notice and use spaces between words.
  • Read orally.
  • Match one spoken word to one printed word while reading 1 or 2 lines of text.
  • Use spaces and some visual information to check on reading.
  • Know names of some alphabet letters.
  • Know some letter-sound relationships
  • Read left to right
  • Recognize a few high frequency words

Independent Writing Level = Early Emergent

The developmental stages of writing for kindergarteners are defined by Prewriting, Early Emergent, and Emergent.  Kindergarteners are expected to be at Emergent+ by the end of the year.  Early Emergent means the following:
  • Uses drawing and word to convey meaning
  • Copies words, names, and labels from environment
  • Uses mostly beginning and ending consonants to spell words
  • Uses upper and lowercase letters indiscriminately
  • Pretends to read own writing

Grade Level Proficiency = all 3s

The grade level proficiency scale is Level 1 (below grade level), Level 2 (approaching grade level), Level 3 (meeting grade level), and Level 4 (extending grade level).  He received all 3s in the following categories:
  • Elements of Reading
  • Foundational Skills in Reading
  • Writing and Language Skills
  • Speaking and Listening Skills
  • Mathematics
  • Social Studies
  • Science
  • Information and Technology
  • P.E.
  • Music
  • Media

Behavior:  = all Satisfactory

He has no absenses and one tardy that was from my emergency room trip back in September where Josh dropped me off at the ER and then took Tyler to school.  :)

His first quarter comments from his teacher were, "Tyler is a pleasure to have in my kindergarten class and has adjusted well.  Tyler needs to read and write nightly."

Well, I'm just glad baseball is over so we have more time for reading :)

Way to go, Tyler!!
