In 2008, I bought a Nikon D60. I researched and found that I wanted a Nikon over a Canon, but I know there are plenty of Canon-happy owners out there! For those of you who are intimidated by this large camera versus the reliable point and shoot, I'm here to tell you that there is an auto button. Once you can learn to focus and get over the fact that there is not a traditional screen you look at to take a picture like in your digital point and shoot cameras, you just push the button. It's really easy. For those who want to do more with photography, there are manual modes. I'm still learning, and honestly I shoot in auto modes a lot!

I have three lenses. My 18-55 mm lens came with my camera. The 18-55mm is the range at which it zooms. So, this is a good all-purpose lens if you want something simple.
My 55-200 mm lens is a telephoto zoom lens. It came zoom very far and would be a great lens to use if you wanted to take pictures of a game from the bleacher but make it seem like you are right on the sidelines. Or, it's also great for macro shots seen below.

My newest and favorite lens is the 35 mm lens. Unlike the others, it doesn't have a zooming range, so it does mean you are moving forward and backwards a lot. But it is GREAT for portraits! Do you notice how the subject is in focus but the background is not? That's because the aperture is high. A large aperture will blur whatever is behind the point of focus, while a small aperture keeps things in focus for a greater distance before and after the point of focus. Clear as mud?
large aperture (blurry background)

low aperture (everything in focus)

I've also posted before that I have a lightscoop, which is my best friend for indoor photos!
In addition to having a nice camera, I spend a great deal editing as well. It's almost as much of an addiction as photographing. I use Photoshop Elements. I'm not trained on how to use this program and in fact, most of what I do I've stumbled upon.
I will say that it takes more than just a nice camera to take nice pictures. I'm not claiming to be a artist, but you do have to think about angles, lighting, backgrounds, and other strategies. But a nice camera sure does get you halfway there!
There you have it--My addiction in a nutshell. As if my life isn't busy enough, I'm taking my hobby and running with it this fall. I have two photo shoots booked this weekend. So, wish me luck! I'm getting my name out there and building experience!
